Help Needed at Food Pantry

Our local Conference of St. Vincent de Paul provides a Food Pantry to serve individuals and families in our area who are in need of food.  To provide this service, we rely on individuals who can volunteer their time to assist us.  We currently need individuals who can help one afternoon or two afternoons per week.

Our Food Pantry is open:
Tuesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m.
Thursday afternoons from 3 – 5 p.m.

Another important need for the Food Pantry is for bilingual individuals.  This is an ongoing need, and in the next few months, we will have a bigger need as the migrant workers come to the area to harvest the crops.

If you are interested in volunteering, please come to the Food Pantry during the hours listed here and talk with our Food Pantry Manager for more details. Your help will be very much appreciated.

The Food Pantry is located in the basement of the building housing the St. Vinnie’s Thrift Store (505 W. 9th St.).  The entrance is from the alley behind the building, at the edge of the W. Trevitt St. parking lot.

The St. Vincent de Paul Conference (St. Peter’s Conference) (SVdP) in The Dalles operates a food pantry to assist individuals and families in The Dalles area with food and food-related items to help meet one of their basic needs.  The Food Pantry is the largest one in Wasco County and is open two days per week (Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m., Thursdays, 3-5 p.m.) and is operated by volunteers plus a paid Food Pantry Manager.

Sources of food for the Food Pantry include the Oregon Food Pantry, Fred Meyer through their “Fresh Alliance” Program, Safeway for various bread items, and various individuals and groups who donate various items.  In addition, each year the ELFF (Everyone Loves a Fire Fighter) Food Drive results in a portion of the donated food coming to our Food Pantry.  Seasonally, in conjunction with Oregon Food Pantry, the SVdP Food Pantry provides migrant food boxes to families temporarily in the area to assist in the fruit harvest.  At Christmas time, in conjunction with Salvation Army in The Dalles, food donations are requested to provide a food box for families during the holiday season.

The volunteers take individuals around the Food Pantry, allowing them to pick out items they have a use for rather than providing a prepared food box with items they may not have a need for.  Amounts available for each commodity are based on the number of individuals in the family.  Therefore, a family of 1 receives less quantity of each item than a family of 4, for example.

Volunteers are always welcome, as are donations of food items that are not beyond their expiration date, and these items can be donated during our open hours.
