Food Bank Summer Update 2019 – We Set a Record in June!

It has been a busy summer at The Dalles Food Bank.  In fact, we set a record in June!

The Numbers

  • May through July we served 952 families, which represented 3514 people.
  • We set a record in June when we served 366 households with 1490 people.

If you have some time to volunteer and would like to be part of a great team serving these folks, we can use you.

How to Help

  • Stock shelves
  • Pick up from Oregon Food Bank,
  • Drive our truck
  • Help the folks fill their carts with nourishing canned food, fresh vegetables and fruits; and canned meats.

Most of the work is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Just a couple hours a week would be of great help. We especially need bi-lingual folks at this time. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, email our director: dave@svdpthedalles.org or phone 541-296-9566, or contact lizpolehn@gmail.com.

We are open to our community from 1 to 3 PM on Tuesdays and 3 to 5 PM on Thursdays.

The Birthday Bag

Several years ago, the students at St. Mary’s Academy chose a school project for National Catholic Schools week. The students thought kids who received food from the food bank should be able to have a celebration for their birthdays just like other kids. So they decided to make up birthday bags for them. Each bag contains, a cake mix, icing, a pan to cook it in, plates, spoons, napkins and even sprinkles.

The students brought in their spare change and sold donuts after mass to raise the funds. Then during the week assembled the birthday bags. First year they did about 30 or 40. Parents joined in and started to pick up an extra cake mix or so, or had extra bags to donate. Last spring 200 bags were delivered to the St. Vincent De Paul food bank.

Kids are incredible. They don’t see colors, they don’t see rich or poor. They just see other kids who need a little something to celebrate.

Our food bank provided 208 food boxes in the month of June. Our service center on west 3rd provided laundry for 72 folks, 100 plus showers, propane, bus tickets, emergency housing, and $1600 in clothing vouchers through St. Vinnies. For over twenty years, Community Meal provides food Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for all who come. In addition, Bread and Blessings offers a breakfast Monday through Friday at 9:00 AM.

These groups use our facility free of charge. The homeless folks that use our service center are always in need of toiletries. When you’re on vacation and end up with some soap, shampoo, conditioner, and want to get rid of them, we can use them. Also on the wish list are can openers, hand sanitizer, sewing kits, Q-tips, safety pins, hair ties and dog food.

December 2018 Monthly News

We are a group of like minded people dedicated to serving our needy sisters and brothers. We accomplish that mission
in a number of ways. Chief among those are missions found at the Third Street Ministry. The Ministry is open weekdays
for companionship, spirituality, coffee, showers, washers and dryers as needed. Provisions are made for clothing
vouchers from the St. Vinnies Store on Ninth Street.

Your donations help to maintain our building which is used by the Bread and Blessings Organization to provide
breakfasts M – F and by the Community Meal Organization to offer meals on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.

One of our more important missions is the Warming Place going on right now. When the temperature drops to a certain
level, folks are welcomed in to spend the night. Paid hosts and volunteers man the program.
There is a place for everyone at St. Vincent de Paul …. The Food Bank, The Warming Place, Christmas Boxes, help doing
a newsletter or just plain volunteering.

Help Needed at Food Bank

Our local Conference of St. Vincent de Paul provides a Food Bank to serve individuals and families in our area who are in need of food.  In order to provide this service, we rely on individuals who can volunteer their time to assist us.  Currently we are in need of individuals who can help either one afternoon or two afternoons per week.

Our Food Bank is open:

Tuesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m.

Thursday afternoons from 3 – 5 p.m.

Another important need with for the Food Bank is for individuals who are bi-lingual.  This is an ongoing need, and in the next few months we will have a bigger need as the migrant workers come to the area to harvest the crops.

If you are interested in volunteering your services, please come to the Food Bank during the above days/hours and talk with our Food Bank Manager for more details.  You can also contact our Manager via her cell phone 503-310-6825. Your help will be very much appreciated.

The Food Bank is located in the basement of the building housing the St. Vinnie’s Thrift Store (505 W. 9th St.).  The entrance is from the alley behind the building, at the edge of the W. Trevitt St. parking lot.

New Society of St. Vincent de Paul Television Series Premieres March 4 on EWTN

Are you searching for a way to grow in faith while helping others? Then tune into the new television series, “Our Faith in Action: Today’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul,” which premieres Sunday, March 4 on EWTN. (Click here to find the EWTN channel in your zip code. Click here to view the program schedule.)

“The TV show is great for highlighting the Society’s name, brand and some of our special works,” said SVdP National President Ralph Middlecamp. “The Society of St. Vincent de Paul puts an emphasis on growing in faith through doing good works. We hope that television viewers who see ‘Our Faith in Action’ will feel we have answered their need for how they can put their own faith into action and will be moved to join the Society in their communities.”

The 10-episode series airs 6:30 a.m. ET and 4:30 p.m. ET Sundays, beginning March 4, and 6 p.m. ET, Saturdays, beginning March 10.

The series will follow SVdP members on their spiritual growth journey through service to people and families in need. From the Society’s traditional home visits, food pantries and assistance with rent and utilities, to innovative health care, financial and mentoring programs, the Society’s members, known as Vincentians, see the face of Christ in the people they encounter. In this series, Vincentians volunteer across the country to bring effective, personalized help to people in poverty and share their stories of Christ’s love along the way.

“EWTN is pleased to premiere this special series, which follows the impact of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul on a group of its volunteers,” said EWTN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw. “By providing a global audience for this program, I hope that EWTN’s viewers will find themselves spiritually uplifted and challenged to work with those in need in even more fruitful ways.”

Two unique aspects of the Society are the spiritual growth of members and visits with people in poverty in their homes. The Society is composed of women and men who seek to grow closer to God through works of charity. In this way, the Society differs from other charitable agencies whose principal objective is not the spiritual advancement of their members, but the doing of good for someone else. SVdP helps members grow spiritually. Meeting with people in their homes, as friends, shows the importance of treating people in need with dignity and respect, a hallmark of the Society.

One of the largest charitable organizations in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (www.svdpusa.org) is an international, nonprofit, Catholic lay organization of about 800,000 men and women who voluntarily join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in 150 countries on five continents. With the U.S. headquarters in St. Louis, Mo., membership in the United States totals nearly 100,000 in 4,400 communities.

SVdP offers a variety of programs and services, including home visits, housing assistance, disaster relief, education and mentoring, food pantries, dining halls, clothing, assistance with transportation, prescription medication, and rent and utility costs. The Society also works to provide care for the sick, the incarcerated and the elderly. Over the past year, SVdP provided over $1.2 billion in tangible and in-kind services to those in need, made more than 1.7 million personal visits (homes, hospitals, prisons and eldercare facilities) and helped more than 20.9 million people regardless of race, religion or national origin.

Our conference provides a Ministry Office to visit with people seeking services; operates a Food Bank (Tuesday and Thursday afternoons); hosts the Warming Place during the coldest winter months; works with other groups for special programs (i.e., Back to School, Christmas Food Boxes).

Please consider getting involved with St. Peter’s Conference!

When a member of our community is hungry, cold or hopeless, where do they turn? If they are like most in our community, they turn to St. Vincent de Paul – The Dalles.
